Chief Operator – Rail Flaw Detection

*HEAVY TRAVEL POSITION!! Must be able to travel 3 -4 months at a time!*

*Job Summary*

*Field Operator – Rail Flaw Detection*

*SUMMARY OF POSITION**: *

Responsible for the proper operation of all flaw detection and detector car personnel

Accurate testing to ensure reliability of rails and notifying customer of defects;
* Supervising/managing crew safety, performance, quality, cost control and operating Sperry rails proprietary equipment for the assigned “business unit”;

* Maintaining a direct relationship with the customer.

*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**: *

*Rail Testing*

· Independently operate and maintain rail flaw detector vehicles;

· Coordinate and plan all details involved in scheduled test program, to include:

o Time and location of test

o Time and location of link-up with Railroad Personnel

· Operate test in conformance with established equipment parameters, values, and calibrations;

· Maintain expected standard of productivity without compromising quality or system integrity;

· Comply with Sperry Management-approved, specific customer procedures and guidelines regarding flaw detection.

*Administrative*
* Responsible for performing reporting procedures required by the Company and customer;
* Responsible for yearly performance evaluations for crew administered annually;
* Prepare proper documentation of operational and maintenance activities;
* Coordinate testing schedule with customer, allocate timeframe for appropriate vehicle maintenance;
* Approve and validate the hours worked for the crew members working under his/her supervision through completion of the Operator Conditions Report
* Approve and sign the legal record of internal rail inspection (Car Movement Report), and the location and type of defects found (Defective Rail Report) daily.

*Supervision and Training*
* Supervise, lead and train operations personnel according to established Company and management guidelines;
* Ensure compliance with policies and procedures by operations personnel.
* Address performance issues through initiation of the Progressive Disciplinary Policy;
* Evaluate operations personnel performance, including nominating Driver Trainees for the Sperry School of Rail Testing;
* Coach, lead, and mentor operator trainees and drivers

*Maintenance*
* Instruct operations personnel in proper maintenance procedures;
* Ensure all maintenance is performed in a safe manner by enforcing Sperry Rail safety policies and procedures;
* Maintain standard inventory at a sufficient level to reduce down time
* Identify any unusual or serious condition of equipment and report same immediately to Shelton for recommendations;
* Maintain an organized and clean detector car;
* Assist field and maintenance personnel, perform trouble shooting and repairs to equipment.

*Safety*
* Uphold Company safety policy at all times;
* Comply with any specific safety rule that is dictated by the customer.
* Lead the daily safety briefing
* Take immediate action to stop operations if potentially unsafe acts are observed; and work with railroad personnel to remedy any unsafe acts before resuming operations.

*Customer Relations*
* Comply with and provide instruction to operations personnel concerning all policies, guidelines, and procedures specific to the customer;
* Exercise diplomacy and cooperation at all times with railroad personnel;
* Immediately report in detail any complaints by railroad personnel

*MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**: *

· Education: High School Diploma/GED +

· Skills/Qualifications: Solid understanding of maintenance and repairs associated with Sperry’s vehicles and experience supervising/managing a team
* Ability to successfully complete Sperry’s Field Operator Training Program
* Skills/Competencies: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
* *85% Travel Required*
* *Heavy Travel Required!*

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $70,000.00 – $75,000.00 per year
