Chief Communications Officer & VP Communications


This is a Contract position in Las Vegas, NV posted November 23, 2021.

The Chief Communications Officer (CCO) will serve as a strategic advisor to the President and the leadership team of Company.

The CCO will collaborate with senior leadership to execute on long-term organizational strategy, while also leading the team to work simultaneously on multiple timelines, partnering with policy centers on visibility and identity for bodies of work and executing on a constant pipeline of high-stakes projects.The CCO works closely with the President on executive communications and at times will serve as a spokesperson and ambassador for Company to key constituencies.

Company wants someone who can keep the Company comms team at the forefront – retain and grow their reputation for innovation in the field of policy research – continue to grow reputation for timeliness and relevance.

They want a CCO who will further deepen the perception of Company as the “go-to” trusted resource for high quality and accessible analysis of front page issues by media, funders, and policymakers.

The CCO will lead and develop a diverse team of approximately 60 highly talented communications professionals across a range of different functional areas including strategic communications, digital communications, data visualization, editorial services, media relations, design and communications operations.

This leader will think strategically about how Communications is structured in order to meet the enterprise-wide goals of the organization and to best partner with the research teams.

The CCO will foster an environment where colleagues engage in strategic conversations and support continuous improvement efforts.

The CCO will advance the Company race and equity framework within the Comms team, across the organization and externally.

Responsibilities Advance the organization’s mission by promoting and amplifying its vision, people, research and impact with a wide variety of audiences through a diverse mix of communication tools, platforms and partnerships.

Work closely with the President and leadership team to create a long-term strategy to expand Company’s impact and engagement with a range of stakeholders.

Lead the Communications team in the execution of mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, creative and impact media for the Company Institute.

Advance the organization’s race and equity framework within the Comms team, across the organization and externally.

Oversee a large, diverse Communications team.

Lead and develop a talented communications team including writers, web developers, social media specialists, graphic designers and project managers – and guide them to new levels of service, collaboration and impact.

Ensure the Communications team is best utilized by providing leadership and guidance on effectiveness activities such as pipeline forecasting, planning and project management.

Advise and support the President and other senior leaders on executive communications needs.

Work collaboratively with internal and external partners to elevate the reputation and impact of the Company Institute; further the organization’s mission, and to inform current debate and policy through innovative content, print, digital, and in-person experiences.

As needed, serve as a spokesperson to the media and other external audiences.

Establish relationships based on trust with key journalists, the policy community and other leading influencers.

The Person Pivotal Experience & Expertise Strategic Communications Leader – Able to think holistically to engage in organizational strategy development incorporating communications expertise and resources to meet the long-term goals of the organization as well as current project deliverables.

Experience serving as a trusted advisor to organizational leadership.

Communications leadership experience in more than one relevant sector (research, social impact, government, philanthropy) and in a “mission-driven” organizational culture.

Collaborative, Relationship-Builder
– Highly developed relationship builder with ability to be diplomatic while also influencing others.

Deomstrated ability to work across the entire organization with other organizational leaders and program teams.

Experience engaging with and maintaining strong relationships with staff across levels and fostering a culture that values diversity, equity and inclusion.

Communications Experience
– Strategic communications experience, including media relations and social media.

Deep understanding of current digital communications trends and experience leading an organization’s communications strategy.

Is adept at understanding and engaging external audiences to relate Company’s research and policy initiatives to their interests/needs.

Able to connect the dots across various policy centers or projects.

Experience translating research/thought leadership from experts to external audiences preferred.

Has experience with reputation management and understands the importance of protecting brand identity for an organization.

Team Leadership and Management
– A proven ability to manage a team, both directly and/or indirectly, to deliver a set of key outcomes and deliverables and to foster a culture that is supportive, collaborative, results-oriented and that is inclusive and equitable.

Strong ability to identify talent and build, mentor and lead a team.

Ability to establish priorities for the organization with clearly articulated responsibilities.
