Clinical Pharmacy Specialist

Under general supervision of the VP of R&D and Clinical Outcomes, the Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for performing comprehensive and targeted Medication Therapy Management (MTM) in high risk patients to identify, resolve, and prevent medication-related problems. The Clinical Pharmacist documents the care delivered and communicates essential information to the patient’s primary care providers and the health care team. The Clinical Pharmacist is also responsible to follow processes to improve patient care, outcomes, and quality improvement metrics related to CMS HEDIS/Star ratings and assist in the coordination of the Medical Assistance Program (MAP) for Optum Frontier Therapies patients.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Utilize prescription and medical claim data to generate clinical recommendations according to Medication Therapy Management and Retrospective Drug Utilization Review program protocols
  • Provide clinical recommendations pertaining to, but not limited to, gaps in care, high risk medications, compliance and adherence, drug interactions, therapeutic substitution, and generic substitution
  • Utilize health plan’s formulary information to guide appropriate medication recommendations
  • Remain knowledgeable of current and emerging clinical trends
  • Active participation in various clinical departmental meetings and forums to improve clinical programs, enhance processes, and share clinical information
  • Continuously look for ways to streamline and improve workflow
  • Assist with user acceptance testing for new clinical programs and system enhancements
  • Serves as a clinical resource and consultant in all areas of pharmacy and medication management
  • Assist in mentoring PharmD pharmacy students
  • Acts as a consultant to Optum Frontier Therapies team
  • Supports medical management and pharmacy quality initiatives
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to job
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned to meet departmental objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree
  • Current, unrestricted pharmacy license in the state of residency
  • 2+ years of experience as a pharmacist
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board certification by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS)
  • Certification in Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
  • Nevada Pharmacist Licensure
  • Michigan Pharmacist Licensure
  • Experience with Medicare guidelines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent relationship building skills
  • Planning and organizational skills to demonstrate leadership and initiative
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team
  • Strong analytical and PC operation skills
